OMHI, Advocacy and Oxfordshire Mental Health Matters

Oxfordshire Mental Health Matters received the news this month that they didn’t win the tender to provide mental health advocacy services in Oxfordshire. From 1st April 2010, advocacy will instead be provided by South England Advocacy Projects (SEAP).  We expect SEAP will be taking over the premises at Manzil Way and that several of the Mental Health Matters staff will be transferring to SEAP – all of which should help provide some valuable continuity of service.

Separate from advocacy services Mental Health Matters have always run an information service in partnership with Mind.  We have developed this together as the OMHI (Oxfordshire Mental Health Information) service including a phone line and dedicated website (www.omhi.org.uk).  Given the changes at Mental Health Matters both organisations (and the Primary Care Trust who provide funding for OMHI) have agreed a plan for the OMHI Information service to be taken on and run by Mind.  This means that Oxfordshire Mind will be taking full responsibility for OMHI including the information line and website from 1 April 2010.  To help with this we are pleased to welcome Susan Weavers from Mental Health Matters who will be coming to work for Mind as an Information worker from the start of April. Director of Mental Health Matters, Jon Hyslop will also continue to be involved by giving supervision and support to the OMHI workers staffing the Information Line. We are very happy to welcome Susan to Mind.  Susan and Jon’s continuing involvement will be a great help in ensuring we can continue to provide a high quality information service and continue to develop the service over the next 6 months.

The Oxfordshire Mind Annual Review 2009 is here! Thank you to all those who have contributed.

New services: Oxford Diverse Minds

Oxford Diverse Minds is an activity based support group for Black, Asian and ethnic minority men in Oxfordshire. It aims to work with men who may have experienced difficulties in accessing or engaging with mainstream services in relation to employment or training, accommodation, mental wellbeing or drug or alcohol misuse. The group is run by community-based outreach workers who can facilitate group activities, listen and respect confidentiality, and provide support and information on other services. For more information, contact Jaison Elias on 07958065110 or jaison.elias@oxfordshire-mind.org.uk

Under the umbrella of Oxford Diverse Minds is a new Polish service - 'Przestrzen' meaning 'Space'. The service is provides a friendly, welcoming space for people to meet up, relax, exchange information, dreams, goals and ideas. Meetings take place every Monday 7 - 9pm at The Mill, 46 Cowley Road, Oxford. For more information contact Ania or Dominika on 07785277709 or anna.scigala@oxfordshire-mind.org.uk

Organisational Service User Feedback Questionnaire June 2009 - Final Report

In June 2009 we sent out, via Oxfordshire Mind projects, Notes of the Week and our website, an organisational questionnaire in order to gain feedback from people using our services on different aspects of the organisation.

Oxfordshire Mind: The DVD

With the help of Oxford Film and Video Makers, the service users, volunteers and staff at Oxfordshire Mind have produced, directed and starred in Oxfordshire Mind: The DVD, a short film about the work the charity does around the county. The DVD had a successful launch at The Mill in July with lots of the on-screen and behind-the-scenes stars in attendance, who were presented with certificates with Geron Swann, director of OFVM. Mind IAPT Pilot – Evaluation Report

For many years Oxfordshire Mind have run a programme of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Groups. The feedback from this service has always been very positive and it has given us a good understanding of how effective CBT can be in equipping people with skills and techniques to take greater control over their lives.

All of this meant that when we started to hear about the ambitious plans for the ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies’ (IAPT) Programme we were very interested to see how the plans developed locally in Oxfordshire. We were also keen to be involved and believed that our experience and the skills of Mind workers would have a lot to contribute.

During 2008 Mind worked with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) and set up the first ‘Step 2’ IAPT service in Oxfordshire. The Evaluation of this pilot project is now complete and can be downloaded here.

There was a high demand for the service with 648 referrals in just over 4 months and the Evaluation indicates that the work made a significant difference to a great many patients referred by the participating GP practices. The credit for this achievement should go to the small team of Mind workers (Amanda Jarman, Sarah Sanderson, Laura Kerr Harnott, Amaryllis Roy & Stuart Dobinson) who have been out there doing the work. But tremendous thanks should also go to the Primary Care Trust and the 22 GP practices who have worked with us.

The IAPT Programme has now moved on. The Step 2 Pilot has come to an end and plans are advanced for training up new workers and developing an IAPT service that will work across the whole county. The lessons of this Pilot will certainly be useful in this next stage.

We hope you find this Evaluation Report interesting. A final comment from a participating GP … “The service has proved extremely useful. I think it stands a chance of making a real difference to mental health management. I am very disappointed that the pilot time has already come to an end and I would be very keen to have such a service offered to my patients in the long term. It is one of the most positive innovations in primary care in along time. Please can we have it sustained”.
