Back to Housing Mind Housing - A resident's eye view

This is how one resident described his experience of Mind Housing:

'Officially when I moved to Mind it was into less supported housing, but I actually feel as supported if not more so here. The staff are so approachable and hands-on. They will come in and have a chat and check on you if they haven't seen you for a while, but they never intrude.

The good thing about the house is that there is always company. There are always five to six other residents around and I've bonded very well with all of them so far. Everyone looks out for each other - if you're feeling down another resident will always help to pick you back up. The only bad thing is that sometimes it can be a bit lonely in the mornings as everyone else tends to sleep late! The kitchen tends to be a real hive of activity - everyone meets up in there. But if you need privacy to see your CPN or social worker there are a couple of spare rooms available.

I think I've really changed as a person since moving to Mind housing. I feel safer and more secure since I've been here. I used to self-harm a lot but I've been doing that less. I've become easier to live with and I've come to terms with living as a separate person rather than as part of a couple or a family unit. My confidence has blossomed - I believe in myself more. Recently I gave a speech of thanks on behalf of all service users at the leaving party for one of the staff - I'd never have had the courage to do that a year ago.

When I was in hospital I felt that I would become institutionalised and I didn't at first believe that there were opportunities out there for people with mental health difficulties. But Mind is also helping to prepare me to move on. I'd like to stay another couple of years and then ultimately to go into the caring system as a worker or volunteer. I'd like to give something back as I've been in the system a while and so have quite a lot of insight into it.

I'm starting at college next month to get my basic IT skills etc up to scratch, and then hopefully I'll look at doing some sort of caring course, maybe with the Council for Voluntary Action. In the long term I'd also like to become a Trustee for Mind, so that I can be involved in the projects even when I've left Mind housing.'
