Fundraising

Funds raised for Oxfordshire Mind will help provide vital services for people who are experiencing mental and emotional health problems such as anxiety, bereavement, depression, life crisis, loneliness, recovery from breakdowns, panic attacks, post-natal depression, stress and schizophrenia.

Last year there were over 36,000 visits to Mind day services in Oxfordshire alone and every year Oxfordshire Mind aims to raise over £30,000 to sustain and develop its services. We rely on donations and support from the public to continue our work. Many thanks for your support.

Just to let you know that Trek Ireland was a huge success!

On day 1 our seventeen eager trekkers landed in sunny Cork and were transferred to Glenbeigh, a small town on the coast of Kerry and we all enjoyed a leisurely trek to the Sea where some of us sat to soak in the sun, some paddled in the sea and some of us enjoyed ice creams!  In the evening we had a lovely meal and went to the pub to celebrate Karen Simpson’s 50th Birthday with a pint of Cider or Guiness and cake!

On Day 2 we trekked from Glenbeigh to Glencar (approx 11 miles) This was an acclimatising walk leading along a quiet lane high above the beautiful Caragh Lake and on to a place known as Windy Gap!  We then trekked down to Blackstone’s Bridge then through the woods to Glencar, a tiny settlement nestled in the middle of the peninsula besides the McGillycuddy’s Reeks meaning ‘The Black Stacks’.  The flowers (including hundreds of  foxgloves, heather and wild orchids) where were a delight to see.

Day 3 we trekked from Glencar to Black Valley (13 miles) We set off after a good hearty breakfast and walk past Lough Acoose, the starting point for a memorable circuit of Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntuohill.  We continued past the Lough (where we witnessed a mini tornado whizzing across the lough) and isolated farms to walk up through the Reeks on the old lack road and into the isolated Bridia Valley.  We climbed up one mountain before our lunch stop at “The Cookie Monsters Café” and then out of the valley via a second mountain pass and over wild and rugged hills descending into the Black Valley directly underneath Ireland’s highest mountains.

On Day 4 we trekked from the Black Valley to Killarney (14 miles) Our final day lead us through the Killarney National Park which was just beautiful.  We saw Lord Brandon’s Cottage and then went into the Derrycunnihy Forest which was amazing. Our final part of the route then joined up with Galway’s Bridge, where we followed the old Kenmare road past Muckross House to Killarney. After a short rest it was then time to enjoy true Killarney Irish hospitality starting with our traditional celebration at one of the local restaurants.  After this we had a  visit to one or two of the lively pubs with traditional Irish Music which was a great way to wrap up the trek relax!

From myself, Susan Mundy and Val Smith we’d just like to say thank you to all those staff and service users who made donations or helped the trekkers reach their targets.  They all had a fantastic time and we hope to have a photo show that anyone is welcome to view once I have managed to put all of the pictures together.  Nicky ;o)
